The
Most Important Thing
Date of composition: April 2001, Chicago
Notes: This song is built around a line from a
children's book by Margaret Wise Brown called The Important
Book. I came across it while reading an article in Vanity Fair
a few years ago about Brown's career, somewhat tragic life and certainly
tragic death. It was a really well-written article--either that
or it was engrossing simply because of the biographical figure at
its center, I can't be sure. But I was taken with an excerpt from
the book that the article had referenced--this line about how the
sky's always there. I haven't read the book itself, or even remember
the surrounding text to that line, I just grew attached to the sentiment.
I should probably read the book.
Sure it's big and beautiful,
So blue and wide and deep.
And when the sun goes down,
it shimmers like nothing you've ever seen.
But the most important thing about the sky
It's always there.
No matter how far you run,
You find the same sky everywhere.
Sure it's got those pretty clouds,
That shape shift so magical
And when it blows that gentle wind,
the clouds sail across it in lazy drifts.
But the most important thing about the sky,
It never leaves,
It's there to say hello when you wake up,
It's there at night when you lay your head to sleep.
Sure it's where the tallest tree tops reach so high
It's where the stars gleam all clear and bright
It's where the mountain tops stand regally
It's so grand that everyone in the whole world can
see.
But the most important thing about the sky.
It never wants to walk away.
It doesn't mind the silly things we do or say.
it's happy to be with you,
Even on the rainy days.
Can you be more like the sky,
Would it be so hard to try,
Can we be more like the sky
Then we'd never have to say goodbye.
