Borrowed
Words
Date of composition: August 2001, Bethesda
Notes: My brother, who's quite the guitarist, was
studying jazz guitar a few years ago. I picked up his book of jazz
standards and was flipping through it and this song is the result.
Titles of jazz standards, played by everyone from Thelonious to
the Modern Jazz Quartet, are in every other line or so of this song,
even in the refrain. They're either titles of jazz standards (songs),
or titles of jazz records themselves. It's safe to assume there
are no nods to Kenny G here. I bet you'll recognize at least a few.
It's true,
You've caught me in a sentimental mood,
Softly as a morning sunrise
Softly that's how I think of you.
Stars hanging in the sky,
Splintery white against a kind of blue,
500 miles high,
That's how tall I could love you.
*Refrain:
I'm falling in love with love,
Wait I mean you,
I'm falling in love with love,
You leave me at a loss for words
So I guess I'll have to borrow a few.
Straight, no chaser
That's how your eyes startled me so,
You are a waking dream
My quiet misterioso.
Oh, it's happened again,
I let a song go out of my heart,
That's what happens when
love supreme gives a lonely soul a little jump start.*
It might as well be spring,
There's only one thing missing.
