Superimpose
Date of composition: March 2001, Chicago
Notes: The song's photography terminology I picked
up from my old roommate in Chicago, who incidentally took photos
for the last ep. You photography types know light meters, the technique
of dodging and burning, and using enlarger lenses far better than
I do. In fact, I don't really know much about these technical aspects
of photography--I just liked the technical vocabulary. On a semi-related
note, there's a novel by William Vollman called You Bright and
Risen Angels, the sub plot of which has a wildly imaginative
and intriguing photography motif-theme-whatever that might interest
those with photography interests, (aside from the main plot about
a war between humans and insects.) It's not science-fiction, or
as strange and off-putting as it sounds. Actually, it's an amazing
piece of writing. Anyway, the song's below.
Superimpose an image of you
on underexposed image of me,
Don't have any pictures of you
So I gotta rely on a photographic memory.
Light meter blinks a negative sign,
Aperture a little too closed,
But when I start thinking of you
Something opens inside and a positive blink
flashes into view.
*Refrain:
I want to know you, I want to know you more,
I want to know what you're thinking, I want to feel
you close.
Maybe I'm fooling myself, but I don't want anyone
else.
So close and yet so far away, I can't help all this
daydreaming.
Develop my imaginary film
mix the chemicals right,
want to make contact with you,
in the dark room of your eyes.
Place prints under enlarger lens,
watch shades of color appear,
your face I can barely make out
So I dodge and burn until you become clear.*
Haven't you heard what they used to say,
About stepping in front of the camera's way,
Photograph steals your soul,
And you're never the same again.
So the next time we meet,
I'll take a 36 roll,
I'll photograph your every move,
Cause the heart that I want is the heart that's yours.
